Stratus track log

Flying opens up a world of adventure, whether it’s an epic flight to Alaska or a $100 hamburger run to a nearby airport restaurant. Now Sporty’s and Flight Outfitters want pilots to share their favorite adventure, and get entered to win a grand prize package worth over $400, plus other prizes for weekly winners.

“We think one of the best ways to record a flying adventure is with a Stratus,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “In addition to delivering in-flight weather, traffic, GPS position, and backup attitude to your iPad, Stratus also includes a flight data recorder, which automatically logs all of your flights, complete with GPS position and attitude.”

It’s easy for pilots to enter; just share your most interesting Stratus track log: your first solo, a flight to Oshkosh, the perfect S-turn, a unique instrument approach, or whatever else you found memorable.

Between now and September 28, 2018, Sporty’s and Flight Outfitters will pick a weekly winner with the pilot winning a $50 Sporty’s gift card. At the end of those four weeks, all four winners will be matched head-to-head and Sporty’s customers will vote on the grand champion. The pilot with the most votes will win a Pilot Your Own Adventure prize pack from Sporty’s and Flight Outfitters. This includes a Flight Outfitters Bush Pilot Jacket, a Flight Outfitters Bush Pilot Duffel, and a $200 Sporty’s Gift card – a total value of more than $400.

To enter, email your favorite track log to [email protected], along with your name and home airport. Entries can be emailed directly from ForeFlight or CloudAhoy; just make sure your track log was recorded on a Stratus. Entries will be accepted until 11:00 pm on September 27, 2018.

Three pilots’ pictures now on Sporty’s Pilot Shop Cover

Sporty’s Pilot Shop teamed with the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) to hold a photo contest where the top three winning photos would be displayed on the Sporty’s Pilot Shop September 2018 catalog cover.

The first-place winner is Charles Christenson whose photo depicts his 1967 Cessna 182 on Alder Lake with Mount Rainier in the background. Alder Lake is a 7-mile long reservoir on the Nisqually River in Eatonville, Washington, which was created by the construction of Alder Dam in September 1944.

The second-place winners are Jim and Janette Riley, whose photo is of their Husky on short final at Wilson Bar, which is a public-use U.S. Forest Service Airport located near Dixie, Idaho. The third-place winner is Cory Kittle who submitted a photo of a PA-18 Super Cub in front of Colony Glacier near Lake George, Alaska.

“The back-country flying that the RAF works to protect is the kind of flying many pilots dream of when they earn their license,” said Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “We’re pleased to partner with the RAF to showcase this beautiful part of general aviation.”

About the Recreational Aviation Foundation:

The Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) is a nonprofit organization, founded by a group of Montana pilots who realized the threat of recreational airstrip closure was of national concern. They also recognized the need for a unified effort by pilots everywhere to protect aviation access for recreational opportunities. The RAF is dedicated to preserving existing airstrips and creating new public-use recreational airstrips throughout the United States.

Keep Flying and Charging while Using Your iPad

Keep Flying and Charging while Using Your iPad

Flight Gear Backup Battery

Sporty’s Flight Gear Backup Battery does it all

The all-new Flight Gear Backup Battery for iPad is the pilot’s answer for charging mobile devices on the flight deck. This battery packs 20,000mAh, but its slim shape will fit in any flight bag. This battery can charge multiple iPads and Stratus at the same time even while those devices are in use.

A total of four high amp USB ports are available to charge your devices, three standard USB-A ports (like those found on computers and wall chargers) and one USB-C output port.

Sporty’s Flight Gear Backup Battery also offers flexible charging options when it needs to be recharged. No more trying to find the proprietary charging cable or a certain type of cable you may not normally carry. The Flight Gear Backup Battery can be charged with a Micro-USB, Type-C, or Lightning Cable.

“Any time you add an electronic device to the cockpit, you run the risk of interference with the radios,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “We’re very concerned about that problem, so we’ve tested the Flight Gear Battery pack in multiple aircraft and through hundreds of flight hours to ensure that it won’t become a nuisance in the plane.”

Sporty’s Flight Gear Backup Battery has built-in safety features that constantly monitor the battery health. In the event of a problem, the battery will shut down until the issue is resolved, protecting against temperature fluctuations, overcharging, over discharging, short circuits and other issues.

Measuring 7.75” x 3.75” x 0.5” and weighing less than one pound, Sporty’s Flight Gear Backup Battery has a quick reference guide in the form of a placard printed directly on the back of the battery.

Save with Sporty’s Flight Gear Charging Bundle

With the Flight Gear Charging Bundle, you can charge everything you need at home, in the car or airplane, and on the go. These charging accessories are created for pilots with the goal of eliminating electronic interference, overheating problems, low amperage USB ports and low-quality chargers.

“When your iPad is considered required equipment, you better have the power it needs,” adds Zimmerman.

Included in the Sporty’s Flight Gear Charging Bundle is the Flight Gear Battery Pack for iPad, the Flight Gear USB Cigarette Lighter Adapter with Voltage Meter, and the Flight Gear Dual USB Wall Plug.

The Flight Gear Backup Battery for iPad [6639A] is available for $79.95. The Flight Gear Charging Bundle [B1124A] is available for a special price of $99.95. Each may be purchased at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Sporty’s now a Training Content Partner with Flight Schedule Pro

Sporty’s now a Training Content Partner with Flight Schedule Pro

Pilots can now take full advantage of Sporty’s flight training syllabi in the Flight Schedule Pro (FSP) system – a leading flight school management platform. Both instructors and students can track flight training progress and maintain records electronically after choosing “Sporty’s” within FSP’s student training module.

“Sporty’s training content delivered through FSP is essentially a digital version of our existing training curriculum for Private, Instrument, and Commercial pilot training and allows for online record keeping and tracking,” said Sporty’s Academy President Eric Radtke.

Being able to track flight training process helps keep flight students motivated and may help reduce the high dropout rate when a student can use a proven, high-quality training curriculum. Flight schools and instructors will also benefit by easing the work involved in FAA compliance.

“We’re excited that pilots and instructors alike will have the added convenience of choosing a proven, digital curriculum from Sporty’s through FSP,” adds Radtke. “The FSP option will also help bridge the online training for Sporty’s existing course users with training accomplished in the airplane.”

Sporty’s Awards First Flight Crew Scholarship

Sporty’s Awards First Flight Crew Scholarship

David Ross of Afton, Tennessee, is the first recipient of a $2,500 scholarship awarded through his membership in the Sporty’s Flight Crew program. Dave plans to put this money toward an instrument rating.

Sporty’s Flight Crew Scholarship winner David Ross.

Sporty’s Flight Crew is a three-level customer benefit program that rewards customers with access to training programs, unlimited free shipping, an on-call personal Sporty’s shopper, and more. The top two levels (gold and platinum) include the opportunity to apply for this $2,500 scholarship.

Dave says that airplanes have fascinated him since age 8 and he later worked as a lineman at Allegheny County Airport (KAGC) during college. He earned his private pilot’s license in 1977 and hoped to become more involved in aviation but, like many pilots, Dave says, “Life took me on another path and I slipped away from flying.” Now he is pursuing an instrument rating as the first step in becoming a flight instructor.

“Dave never lost his passion for flying, but he essentially became a rusty pilot,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “But now he has the time and the wherewithal to pursue his passion. Welcome back to the general aviation community, Dave!”

Dave is both an AOPA and EAA member and serves as the vice president of the EAA chapter in Greeneville, Tennessee. Dave’s hopes are that his two sons will learn to fly, and he will be their flight instructor,  he says, “to carry on the aviation interest in our family that began with me.”

The second Sporty’s Flight Crew scholarship will be awarded in December 2018. It’s easy to enroll as a Sporty’s Flight Crew member by visiting sportys.com/flightcrew or by telephoning 1-800-SPORTYS.

Sporty’s Launches Stratus 3

Sporty’s Launches Stratus 3

More features, low introductory price

Stratus 3 adds new features and additional app support, plus a $200 price reduction.

Today Sporty’s introduced Stratus 3, the latest generation of aviation’s best selling and most trusted weather receiver. Over the last six years, pilots have logged millions of hours with Stratus in everything from antique taildraggers to military fighter jets, using Stratus to make smarter in-flight decisions. The new model includes popular features like subscription-free weather, dual band ADS-B traffic, GPS, and backup attitude information, plus additional app options and a new low price.

“With our partners Appareo and ForeFlight, Sporty’s keeps making a great unit better,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “Pilots have asked for more features and more flexibility, and we’re happy to deliver both – plus an amazing price.”

Stratus 3 has an introductory price of $699, which is $200 less than Stratus 2S, but still enhancing features and performance. In fact, pilots will find thoughtful additions like an automatic shutoff mode that senses the conclusion of a flight, thus saving battery life.

Another new feature is smart WiFi, which allows pilots to use the iPad’s LTE connection while connected to Stratus 3, ideal for last-minute flight plan changes on the ground. What’s more, pilots can now hide the Stratus WiFi network or make it password-protected, a critical feature for airline and military pilots.

Stratus 3 can also take advantage of some new features from the FAA and ForeFlight. It will receive five new ADS-B products when they start broadcasting later this year, including echo tops, lightning, icing and turbulence forecasts, Center Weather Advisories, and G-AIRMETs. ADS-B traffic is also better than ever, with a 3D display of nearby targets in ForeFlight’s updated synthetic vision view.

Additional app support

Stratus 3 was designed to integrate seamlessly with ForeFlight and pilots will appreciate the deep integration. Complete status information is available right on the moving map page, including ADS-B reception, AHRS performance, and battery status. Plus, Stratus Replay allows ForeFlight users to turn off their iPad screens without missing weather updates. There’s even a built-in flight data recorder that automatically tracks every flight.

Stratus 3 also supports a variety of other aviation apps, both on iOS and Android, using the industry standard GDL 90 protocol. This allows other apps to display weather, traffic, GPS position, and attitude from Stratus 3.

With the introductory price of $699, Stratus 3 [6647A] comes with a dash mount, charging cable, wall outlet charging plug, and Stratus Pilot Guide. Stratus 3 will be on display at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh at booth #3147 in Hangar C and at Sporty’s tent, just outside of Hangar B. Stratus 3 may also be purchased at sportys.com/stratus or by calling 800-SPORTYS.

Sporty’s presence at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh has increased again. Sporty’s tent is bigger than last year and will provide a unique and interactive Oshkosh shopping experience for attendees. Located outside Hangar B in Outdoor Space #260, Sporty’s will set up its Oshkosh retail store chock-full of products to see and try and buy.

“A popular feature of Sporty’s tent is our headset demo area,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “We’ve expanded the headset experience this year with both Bose and Lightspeed having on-site company representatives to demo their headsets and to answer shoppers’ questions.”

Sporty’s can be found in two other locations: the line of Stratus portable ADS-B receivers has its own booth, #3147 in Hangar C, located across from ForeFlight. Wright Bros. Collection, offering aviation-themed gift items, is located at booth #2159 in Hangar B.

Aircraft Transition Courses Added to Sporty’s Pilot Training App

Aircraft Transition Courses Added to Sporty’s Pilot Training App

When it comes to flight training, yes, Sporty’s has an app for that

When Sporty’s released its enhanced Pilot Training app last year, it was designed to keep all training courses organized in one location with room to grow. Now Sporty’s has added new aircraft transition courses to this app so that transitioning to gliders, helicopters, multiengine airplanes and seaplanes is now included.

“We started off with Sporty’s three most popular training courses – Learn to Fly, Instrument Rating, and Flying with ForeFlight, and now this app has ten separate course offerings,” says Sporty’s Academy President Eric Radtke. “Best of all, you can access each course on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV or online and your progress automatically stays in sync.”

Each course includes downloadable video content, test preparation, review quizzes and study guides, but also provides free access to any computer web browser.

The Pilot Training app is free to download through the iOS apple store. Individual courses range from $29.99 to $199.99. Visit sportys.com/courses from more information.

Sporty’s Exclusively Carries New flyGIRL Line of Products

Sporty’s Exclusively Carries New flyGIRL Line of Products

Sporty’s Pilot Shop has added the flyGIRL line of products to its offerings. This all-new line includes tote bags, sport caps, and an array of t-shirts and polo shirts. But flyGIRL is not just for women: flyGIRL offers men’s polos as well for those men who want to show their support of women aviators.

“We hear from our women customers that they want more than a shirt in a man’s size small,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “flyGIRL has shirts specifically designed for women in a range of sizes.”

The goal of flyGIRL is to encourage and inspire women and young girls to open their hearts and minds to their potential to help their dreams take flight. A portion of every flyGIRL sale goes to support the flyGIRL scholarship fund, which periodically awards $5,000 to a woman of any age who is pursuing flight training. The first scholarship was awarded in May 2018.

“Our partnering with Sporty’s means more sales of flyGIRL merchandise which directly translates into more dollars for scholarships for women interested in learning to fly,” says flyGIRL President Natalie Kelley.

“Women are a growing segment of aviation and we support their desire to feel a sense of community and visibility,” adds Zimmerman. “flyGIRL offers a way for women to show their pride in being part of the aviation world.”

All flyGIRL products can be seen and purchased on line at sportys.com/flygirl.
