Flight Gear® Collection Redesigned for Modern Pilots

Contents of flight bags have changed; so must bags

Sporty's redesigned Flight Gear Collection.

Sporty’s redesigned Flight Gear Collection.

With carrying heavy chart binders a thing of the past, pilots now need a bag to protect their iPads and ANR headsets while providing space for charging cords and other electronic accessories. Sporty’s best-selling Flight Gear line of pilot bags has been redesigned for the next generation of flight.

“The iPad has changed the way many pilots are flying – and what they are bringing to the cockpit in their flight bags,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “The active pilots at Sporty’s recognized that need in their own flying and set out to create pilot bags that reflect the needs of current pilots with dozens of pilot-friendly details.”

The Navigator is Sporty’s most popular design since it’s ideal for student pilots and multi-thousand hour pilots alike. Thoughtfully designed pockets protect and organize all your flying gear, while retaining a slim profile and a modern look.

Exterior pockets include a padded headset pocket, padded iPad pocket, iPad accessory organizer for ADS-B receivers and a GPS, quick-access file folder pocket and a front cord storage pocket. The patent-pending HideAway Headset Pockets™ can be opened to offer additional organization for multiple headsets, RAM Mounts or a video camera system. When not in use, the pockets zip closed and stay out of the way. The generously-sized main compartment can hold books, kneeboards, radios, a GPS or even a change of clothes.

“We sized the Navigator so that it is large enough to carry everything you need for a flight, but not so big that it is cumbersome or hard to store in the cockpit,” Zimmerman continues. “You can carry multiple headsets, an iPad, backup charts and all the accessories without feeling as if you’re lugging a suitcase.”

With a six-year warranty, the Navigator features pilot-tested construction techniques such as double-stitched seams, water-resistant rubber bottoms and strong metal hardware. The Navigator [#5015A] measures 10”w x 22”l x 11”h overall and is available for $99.95.

Three other Flight Gear bags are also available.  The Crosswind bag has all the essentials at a compelling price, and is ideal for student pilots.  The Mission bag’s slim, flexible design is perfect for experienced pilots with less to carry.  Finally, the Flight Gear backpack offers pilots a high tech pack with exclusive aviation pockets. Sporty’s will embroider up to three initials on this (or any) Flight Gear bag. All Flight Gear bags may be ordered by calling 1-800-SPORTYS or at sportys.com/flightgear.

SP-400 Hand-held NAV/COM Gets Upgraded Screen, Lower Price

Sporty’s award-winning portable radio optimized for cockpit use

Sporty’s popular SP-400 radio now features an upgraded screen for improved sunlight readability.

Sporty’s popular SP-400 radio now features an upgraded screen for improved sunlight readability.

Sporty’s popular SP-400 Hand-held NAV/COM has been upgraded so it’s even more reliable for pilots in the cockpit. A new screen features a brighter display and a glare-reducing face, making it easier to read in direct sunlight. Plus, improved contrast allows for a larger viewing angle, making it ideal for mounting on a suction cup or a kneeboard. The retail price has also been reduced to $369.

“At Sporty’s we’ve been designing aviation radios literally since day one, so we know what pilots expect,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “Our focus has always been on making the easiest-to-use and most reliable radios, and we’ve think we’ve raised the bar with the upgraded SP-400–even while reducing the cost.”

Pilots also have more options now for customizing the SP-400’s display. The level of contrast is adjustable, allowing the screen to be tailored for each airplane. In addition, pilots can adjust the high and low backlight settings for changing light conditions. There’s even a new “night mode” that reverses the colors on the screen.

“These latest enhancements to the SP-400, based on feedback from the thousands of pilots who are flying with them already, make a great radio even better,” says Zimmerman. “We were honored to win Aviation Consumer’s top pick for portable radios and the SP-400 still features flip-flop communications, NOAA weather radio, VOR navigation and a full ILS display.”

Sporty’s SP-400 Hand-held NAV/COM [SP-400A] is available for $369.00 and may be purchased at sportys.com or by calling 1.800.SPORTYS.

Breathe a Sigh of Relief with Sporty’s Oxygen Organizer

Sporty’s Oxygen Organizer.

Sporty’s Oxygen Organizer.

No more tangled hoses

Storing oxygen masks, hoses, and cannulas normally ends in a big ball of bent hoses, rubber bands and weird looking connectors protruding out at odd angles.  Keeping the mess contained should not have to involve buying new hoses every year.

Sporty’s Oxygen Organizer is just the right size to keep all your oxygen accessories in order.  An internal mesh pocket provides separation for up to two hose assemblies, and a lanyard makes it easy to hang from your oxygen cylinder when not in use. A clear front window allows you to see the contents of the case, and provides a spot for labeling.

Sporty’s Oxygen Organizer [1829A] is available for $12.95, $9.95 for two or more, and may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Sporty’s Launches Flying Club Rebate Program

Members earn money for their flying clubs with Sporty’s purchases

Sporty's Flying Club

Earn 5% cash back with Sporty’s Flying Club

Members of bona fide flying clubs will now receive a 5% rebate on any Sporty’s purchase, which will be paid to their flying clubs on a quarterly basis. There is no fee for this program; flying clubs simply register with Sporty’s.

“We are in support of any initiative that spurs pilots to fly more and keeps the price of flying down,” says Sporty’s President Michael Wolf. “Individuals who belong to flying clubs will make their normal purchases while supplying their flying clubs with revenue to defray club operating expenses.”

To participate in Sporty’s Flying Club Rebate Initiative, each flying club registers with Sporty’s at sportys.com/flyingclub. Part of the registration process is to supply a copy of the bylaws, which must include a provision that the flying club is accepting new members.

Then the flying club provides a list of members, including their email address, and these members are registered as being associated with a particular club. When a purchase is made, the flying club member does not have to use any code or password; they will be automatically recognized as a registered participant. Rebate checks will be issued quarterly to the flying club.

Flying clubs will be able to earn up to $5,000 a year through Sporty’s program. Clubs can add new members at any time and will be asked twice a year to review their registered club members to delete those individuals who are no longer affiliated with a particular club.

“AOPA’s work to encourage the growth of flying clubs was the impetus for our program,” adds Wolf. “We see this program as a way to strengthen flying clubs by giving them an opportunity to earn a rebate simply by their members making their aviation purchases at Sporty’s.”

Flying clubs interested in additional revenue can also sign up to become a Sporty’s dealer. This simple and flexible program allows flying clubs to sell training videos, flight bags and much more, with attractive wholesale pricing.

To sign up for Sporty’s Flying Club Rebate Program, visit sportys.com/flyingclub. To sign up for Sporty’s Dealer Program, visit sportys.com/dealer.

IFR Communications Available from Sporty’s

This updated video transports you to three IFR flights

IFR Communications gives today’s instrument pilot a real-world look at IFR operations through all phases of flight.

IFR Communications gives today’s instrument pilot a real-world look at IFR operations through all phases of flight.

Sporty’s IFR Communications demonstrates real-world flying and communicating in the IFR system by taking you on three separate flights in a variety of airplanes all with the goal of improving your communication skills.

The first real-world flight is in a Cessna Skyhawk equipped for VOR navigation, followed by a flight in a Garmin G1000-equipped Cessna Skylane and finally in a high-performance Piper Malibu Mirage. These three flights incorporate several types of airports ranging from a rural, non-towered airport to Chicago’s heavily traveled Midway.

“We’ve updated this popular program with new material covering specific communications scenarios such as what’s required when entering a hold,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “We’ve also totally revamped the high-performance Malibu Mirage segment to show how to communicate during departure, en route, approach and ground operations at a high-density airport.”

With this program, the demands of each flight and how the pilots effectively manage all available resources to complete each flight are demonstrated. This program conveniently includes an IFR communications refresher, including emergency communication procedures.

“IFR Communications does more than provide knowledge, however,” says Zimmerman. “This app will bring added confidence to your flying, making you a better instrument pilot regardless of experience.”

IFR Communications is also available as a DVD which includes an MP3 audio file for listening on the go and MP4 video file to watch on your mobile device. The DVD [D993A], digital download [E993A] or iPhone/iPad app [90007A] are each available for $34.99 and may be purchased or downloaded at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Sporty’s Academy Named Outstanding Flight School by AOPA

Customer-centric flight training makes for a positive experience2013 FTEXCELLENCE_OFS

Sporty’s Academy is an Outstanding Flight School for 2013 based on an Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association (AOPA) survey of individuals who experienced flight training in the past 24 months. Eric Radtke, president of Sporty’s Academy, will accept the award at AOPA’s Flight Training and Pilot Community Summit on October 9 in Fort Worth, TX preceding AOPA’s Aviation Summit.

“We have worked hard to create a customer-centric flight training experience at Sporty’s,” says Radtke. “We believe in modular training and manageable goal setting for our students. We have created a robust airport community where students and customers can interact and garner support from fellow pilots.”

Sporty’s success may also be measured by its 0% drop-out rate, which means, that in the past 24 months no student has dropped out between first solo and successful checkride.

One of Sporty’s more successful training initiatives is its “Finish Up” program where a student who has dropped out of flight training at another flight school gets back in and devotes the time necessary to earn his or her certificate. The Finish Up training is a program that is custom designed for each individual student based on past experience and future goals.

“Our Finish Up program has drawn students from all over the United States,” says Radtke. “Sad to say that the pool of prospects for this program is a large one, so one by one we’ll turn these prospects into pilots.”

For more information on training at Sporty’s Academy or its Finish Up program, please visit www.sportysacademy.com.

Continue the Christmas Tradition

Sporty’s limited-edition Christmas ornament ready for 2013

The RV-12 is featured on Sporty’s 2013 Crystal Christmas Ornament.

The RV-12 is featured on Sporty’s 2013 Crystal Christmas Ornament.

When you’re a pilot, even your Christmas tree reflects your love of aviation. Sporty’s Christmas Ornament is an annual tradition for pilots, flight schools, FBOs and aviation enthusiasts. The Van’s RV-12 is the star of this year’s elegantly etched crystal ornament.

The latest model from famed aircraft designer Richard VanGrunsven, the RV-12 is a two-seat all-metal side-by-side airplane with a large cabin and superb visibility. It’s also the 2014 Sporty’s sweepstakes airplane.

“We chose the RV-12 for this year’s ornament since Van’s has more than 8,000 completed RV aircraft over the past 40 years,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “It’s amazing that an airplane originally manufactured on a small farm in Oregon has led to a global following with RVs based in 45 countries.”

This custom-etched Ornament includes a bright red ribbon for hanging and is boxed for gift giving. Sporty’s 2013 Crystal Christmas Ornament [9833A] is available for $24.95 and may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Secure Your Devices in the Cockpit

A place for everything and everything in its place…

An organized cockpit relies on all devices being visible and available for use.

An organized cockpit relies on all devices being visible and available for use.

The Pilot Pocket is the answer to where to stow small valuable items such as a Bluetooth GPS or cellphone in the cockpit. Unsecured items can be a danger in flight and even become lost when you need to verify your GPS signal or make a last minute call before takeoff.

“The Pilot Pocket is a simple holder that can keep a Bluetooth GPS conveniently in view or a cellphone out of the way but still within easy reach,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “The Pilot Pocket helps maintain an organized cockpit.”

The Pilot Pocket secures firmly to any smooth plastic or glass window surface with its three suction cup design. Each suction cup has a pull-off tab, making it easy to detach and reattach. It’s perfect for airplane renters.

Precision-cut openings on the bottom and both sides of the Pilot Pocket easily allow for connecting power cables and chargers to a variety of Bluetooth GPS units and cell phones while keeping the cockpit organized. The Pilot Pocket PLUS is a larger unit with room for two pens and a slot to hang sunglasses.

Constructed of high quality, transparent acrylic that is strong, resistant to scratches and won’t discolor in sunlight, the Pilot Pocket has a convenient temperature conversion chart printed on its face for easy in-flight reference.

The Pilot Pocket [#9471A] measures 3.75″H x 5″W x 1.25″D  can hold a GPS or cell phone up to 2.75″ wide and 1″ thick and  is available for $17.95.  The Pilot Pocket PLUS [#8020A] measures 4″H x 6″W x 1.25″D can hold a cell phone or GPS up to 3 1/16″ wide and 1″ thick and is available for $22.95 . Both may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.
