New Soaring Handbook Available from Sporty’s

Perfect for student pilots or old pros

Soaring Pilot's Handbook

Soaring Pilot’s Handbook

Veteran glider instructor and Designated Pilot Examiner Dick Eckels shares a lifetime of knowledge in A Soaring Pilot’s Handbook, a comprehensive new book on mastering glider flying.

A Soaring Pilot’s Handbook delves deep into the intricacies of learning to fly a glider while maintaining an easy-to-read style. The book includes nearly 200 pictures and diagrams to help explain the important concepts. Color images abound in the ebook format while the coil bound handbook includes crisp black & white images along with a color appendix showing cloud formations important to soaring.

A Soaring Pilot’s Handbook is organized by the Areas of Operation found in the FAA Glider Practical Test Standards. It is an excellent resource for students starting their flying pursuits in a glider as well as for existing pilots with an interest in powerless flight.

Eckels decided to write this book when he found far too many students were lacking essential knowledge for the practical test. Many students learn to fly gliders in a club environment which has some advantages. However, the instruction often lacks continuity since the student may float between multiple club instructors. A Soaring Pilot’s Handbook can help to fill in the gaps and provide continuity as a learning resource.

A Soaring Pilot’s Handbook is not just for students. It is also a great resource for glider pilots who would like to brush up on forgotten or missing information. This handbook should also be considered an indispensable teaching tool for glider flight instructors. A solid learning foundation can lead to a more fulfilling and safer flying experience.

“General aviation pilots tend to look at soaring as entirely different from what they do,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “This handbook shows how soaring is just another way to fly.”

This Handbook walks you through the entire process of learning to fly without power so you’ll be ready to go soaring. A Soaring Pilot’s Handbook is available as a coil bound, printed book [M135A] for $39.95 or a convenient PDF ebook [E630A] for $29.95. Either format may be ordered at sportys.com. The printed book may also be ordered by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Successful Launch of Sporty’s 172LITE Program Leads to Sales

Demonstrated need for basic trainer

Sporty's 172LITE panel.

Sporty’s 172LITE panel.

Flight schools and flying clubs nationwide have expressed great interest in Sporty’s 172LITE trainer. As a result of this demand from the marketplace, Sporty’s is offering the 172LITE to flight schools and flying clubs as an affordable trainer.

“After December’s announcement of the 172LITE, my inbox and voicemail were flooded with inquiries from flight schools and flying clubs throughout the country,” Sporty’s Charlie Masters stated. “There is industry-wide demand for a basic, affordable airplane for the training and rental market for which the 172LITE hits the spot.”

The 172LITE begins life as a preowned Cessna 172.  The airframe is inspected by Sporty’s mechanics and a refurbishment plan is developed including:

  •          Engine overhaul by Signature Engines
  •          Windows inspected and replaced as needed
  •          New upholstery for seats and sidewalls
  •          Plastic trim and headliner repaired or replaced
  •          New vinyl floor covering
  •          New metal instrument panel custom fit to the airframe
  •          New electrical switches and circuit breakers
  •          Wiring inspected and replaced as required
  •          Each aircraft is outfitted with an intercom, basic communications radio and Mode C transponder
  •          Instruments are tested and replaced as needed
  •          Landing, Taxi and Position Lights replaced with modern LEDs
  •          Controls and cables inspected and replaced as needed
  •          Lastly, the aircraft is painted and undergoes another thorough inspection

The result is an aircraft with a new appearance, with all the instruments needed for initial training, for about one-third the price of a new Skyhawk.  Although the goal of the 172LITE project is to produce a simple airplane that does not confuse the new student or renter with complicated menu-driven interfaces, the basic panel can be easily customized to accommodate any optional avionics customers may desire.  This work is performed by Cincinnati Avionics, Sporty’s avionics shop.

The order book is now open to purchase 172LITEs, designed for a renewed era of flight training with emphasis on airmanship over systems, in an airframe that can easily accommodate two real-sized adults.  For more information contact Charlie at [email protected] or (800) 908-4359.

Stratus 2 Adds Synthetic Vision With Latest Update

Fifth major feature added in last 12 months

ForeFlight's New Synthetic Vision Feature

ForeFlight’s New Synthetic Vision FeatureFifth major feature added in last 12 months

Sporty’s is continuing its successful partnership with ForeFlight and Appareo by introducing a Synthetic Vision option for the Stratus 2 ADS-B Receiver. This new feature rewrites the book on situational awareness, with luminous terrain, real time pitch and bank information, hands-free declutter, and a brilliant obstacle awareness system.

With Stratus 2, ForeFlight’s Synthetic Vision feature really comes alive. The built-in Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) drives a super responsive pitch and bank instrument in the center of the Synthetic Vision view, in addition to speed and altitude tapes. There is also a new HSI instrument, driven by the Stratus’s WAAS GPS. In an emergency situation, the app offers a backup glass cockpit on your iPad, yet the entire system remains portable and completely wireless.

ForeFlight includes some pilot-friendly features in its Synthetic Vision package that go well beyond the basics:

  • 3D terrain maps. Based on the same detailed terrain database that ForeFlight uses for their terrain profile tool, the app shows a beautiful 3D picture of the world, including bodies of water and mountains. Using a combination of shading, grid lines and realistic runway surfaces, the outside world really comes alive.
  • Color-coded terrain and obstacle alerts. In addition to the static terrain display, the app dynamically color codes both terrain and obstacles based on your altitude to warn of threats. Yellow means it’s within 1000 feet and red means it’s within 100 feet (or above you). This is useful for both VFR and IFR pilots.
  • Smooth decluttering. ForeFlight has a smart system for displaying and hiding obstacles and airport markers, so they automatically appear as you get close, then disappear as you fly over. This keeps the screen readable and there’s nothing for the pilot to do.
  • Automatic night mode. Another handy feature is the app’s transition from a vibrant day mode to a more muted night mode. Over the course of about half an hour (and using the sunset/sunrise information for your local area), the app slowly dims the sky and brings up an accurate star field above the horizon. This saves night vision and again, there’s nothing for the pilot to do.

No firmware or hardware upgrades are required to enable Synthetic Vision. Pilots simply download version 6.6 of ForeFlight Mobile and add a Synthetic Vision subscription–a $25/year add-on to your Basic or Pro subscription. This feature is available for United States and Canada coverages, and works with all Stratus 2 units.

Stratus 2 [8217A] is available for $899 and may be purchased at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Sporty’s 2014 Aviation Trends

It’s that time of year again. As 2014 draws to a close, it’s time we take a look back at the year that was and identify trends we’ve seen developing in general aviation. So, for the fifth time, here we go.

Michael Wolf President and CEO

Michael Wolf
President and CEO

ADS-B Out reaches a tipping point? It’s a much-maligned rule, but thousands of pilots are finally starting to understand what ADS-B is all about. Many are flying with portable ADS-B In recevivers and now understand how much better the traffic picture can be when they install ADS-B Out in the panel. There are as many options as ever, from new Garmin units to “coming soon” products for Appareo and L3, so it’s a great time to start researching. Sporty’s on-site avionics shop, Cincinnati Avionics, has been busy this year installing these systems.

In-flight connectivity is hot. Onboard WiFi is the must-have accessory among the turbine airplane crowd, as passengers demand to stay connected to emails and the web. That’s not practical (or affordable) for piston pilots right now, but emerging technology like Iridium’s portable Go device offers at least a taste.

A new ATP certification rule. This has changed the training process dramatically for pilots working towards an airline career. It’s confusing, complicated and expensive, but the fact is everyone will have to do it who wants a multi-engine ATP. Sporty’s is trying to help, offering a one-week course that’s open to anyone (not just university students), priced affordably and taught by experienced airline instructors.

Pilots focus on proficiency. With avgas prices stubbornly high, pilots are looking for new ways to stay current while logging fewer hours in the left seat. There are more – and better – ways than ever to do this, and Sporty’s participated by introducing five new online courses, covering topics from airspace to communications.

Video cameras move from specs to applications. Whether it’s the latest GoPro or Garmin’s impressive VIRB, portable HD video cameras are hot. But as this market matures, pilots are moving beyond the latest technical specifications and starting to ask, “What do I do with this camera?” Sporty’s launched its MySolo product this year to help, where Sporty’s video pros edit your first solo footage into an exciting video. This program has been used to great effect in Sporty’s own flight school, and is also part of Flying magazine’s “Flying is…” video contest.

Portable and panel avionics connect. It’s been talked about for years, but reality finally caught up with hype in 2014 – portable gadgets like iPads are talking to panel-mount equipment. Aspen is shipping its Connected Panel system, Garmin announced its FlightStream products, and Appareo introduced an ADS-B Out transponder that connects to the Stratus portable ADS-B In receiver. Look for even more to come in this emerging market.

The $1,000 headset competition is stiffer than ever. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more crowded at the top of the aviation headset market, it did. Lightspeed started shipping its top-of-the line Zulu PFX to rave reviews in 2014, and aviation newcomer AKG entered the market with their high tech AV100. Headset companies haven’t lost their minds; pilots are snapping up these headsets.

Portable pulse oximeters become “must have”. With multiple high profile hypoxia accidents in 2014, many pilots recommitted to carrying a portable pulse oximeter to warn of dangerous conditions. With prices under $100, there’s no excuse not to carry one.

Flying clubs gain momentum. After years of talking about flying clubs, 2014 showed real progress with dozens of new clubs starting up and enhanced resources from AOPA being released. In addition to Sporty’s popular flying club rebate program, Sporty’s started its own flying club at I69 with a Cessna 172 and 182.

Portable ADS-B receivers move up-market. No trend report would be complete without mention of the hottest pilot accessory in recent years: the portable ADS-B receiver for tablet apps. These continue to top many general aviation pilots’ wish lists, but even airline and military pilots adopted them in 2014. More and more professional pilots are appreciating the value of going paperless, and seeing the iPad as more than just a chart viewer. What was once a nice-to-have gadget has become an essential part of risk management.

Here’s a final trend: Sporty’s has stayed true to its foundation. We are still focused on general aviation and we still offer flight training. We’ve also remained a family company. I’m proud that 45 of our employees have been with us for over 20 years. Personally, I’ve been at Sporty’s for over 40 years–and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

All of us send our very best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.  We value our relationships with the aviation media so you know the welcome mat is always out for you. Don’t be a stranger – stop by for a visit.

Here’s to a fantastic 2015!

Best Wishes,

MWolf

Sporty’s Launches Cessna 172LITE™ Project

What flight schools need are basic trainers

Sporty's 172LITE panel.

Sporty’s 172LITE panel.

Sporty’s is acquiring Cessna 172s and equipping them with basic flight instruments along with significant interior and exterior enhancements. The only avionics are a communications radio and a transponder. The 172LITE™ will be used at the Sporty’s Academy flight school and rented for $99 per hour.

A factor not usually considered in attracting new pilot starts is today’s trainers overwhelm beginning students as they stare at dozens of switches, buttons and knobs providing access to unneeded information. For solo training the mission is simple: to launch an airplane into the sky and return it safely to the runway.

The Cessna 172LITE™ teaches the student the fundamentals of airmanship and engine management with only the needed instruments to monitor airspeed, altitude, engine health and simple communications.

Selection of the 172 as the platform for the basic trainer provides several benefits to students, instructors and flight schools.  Students will learn from CFIs in the most capable training airplane of all time with the ability to carry the student and instructor without useful load limitations encountered by other training aircraft.  Flight schools will have peace of mind knowing service and parts are readily available for the 172 airframe and Lycoming engine.

An acquired Cessna 172 undergoes a thorough inspection by Sporty’s experienced technicians. Any parts not meeting Sporty’s standards are replaced.  The engine and propeller are removed and overhauled.  The 172LITE™ includes a new metal panel with new, durable switches.  Old wiring is removed and replaced if needed and exterior lighting features modern LEDs.

“For a basic trainer – whose primary purpose is to train a client to solo – the communications radio and transponder are all the avionics needed.” says Sporty’s Founder/Chairman Hal Shevers.

Interior and Exterior Gets Work Too

The 172LITE™ will boast new paint (for that attractive first impression). The rear seat is removed, creating a spacious cargo area. In addition to newly upholstered seats, the cabin’s sidewalls, head liner and floor covering are replaced, along with any bad Plexiglas®. Control cables, hinges and torque tubes are inspected, lubricated and replaced as needed.  Each airframe system (electrical, fuel, etc.) is checked and components overhauled or replaced – and of course the entire aircraft is inspected for corrosion and corrective action is taken.

“The result is an aircraft that looks new to the client.  Due to the low acquisition cost, we can offer it for just $99, lowering the cost of admission in a Part 23 certified aircraft capable of flying with two real-sized adults,” says Shevers. “With only essential instrumentation the student will learn fundamental airmanship.  After mastering those necessary skills the student can then advance to more expensive aircraft to complete their training, but it is simply all the airplane a pilot needs all the way through the Recreational Certificate.”

The future of the 172LITE™ program includes adding a second aircraft to Sporty’s flight school and sharing resources, best practices and information with other flight schools interested in assembling their own basic trainer.

For more information on the Cessna 172LITE™, visit sportys.com/172LITE.
