Make Art from Your Airplane

Make Art from Your Airplane

Send Sporty’s a photo and Sporty’s sends you a replica piece of your airplane!

If your airplane is your pride and joy, then show off a piece of it in your home, office or hangar. Sporty’s will create a piece of wall art based on the tail number of your airplane. These replica tail number signs are created to match your airplane’s paint scheme and tail number. If you are not an aircraft owner, this sign is a great way to commemorate a flying milestone like your first solo or earning a certificate.

Measuring approximately 16 inches by 30 inches, these all-metal signs have a slight contour to replicate the aircraft. The sign has 25 hand-punched rivets and a punched perimeter for an authentic body panel finish.

“You will be emailed a proof of your replica before production to approve,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “That way you’ll know your sign is just what you want.”

The Custom Tail Number Replica Sign [25010A] is available for $209.95 and may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS. Note that this sign takes up to three weeks for completion once you have approved the design.

Don’t Depend on Santa – Buy yourself a Leather Jacket

Don’t Depend on Santa – Buy yourself a Leather Jacket

It’s the holidays – treat yourself to the pilot jacket you’ve always wanted

Your pilot persona isn’t complete until you have a pilot’s leather jacket. You’ve earned it; you deserve it – and these two jackets from Sporty’s have earned four stars plus from pilots who own one.

The Classic Leather Bomber Jacket was designed more than 80 years ago as the original A-2 and was standard issue. Since then, generations of pilots have made this jacket a cultural icon, crafted with the original Mil-Spec #A2-98 as a guide.

The leather is long-lasting and easy to clean. With brass zippers and lined hand warmer pockets, this jacket has a loose fit with a tight-fitting waist to block the wind. The three-piece underarm gusset makes for easy arm movements.

The Modern Leather Flight Jacket updates the classic A-2. Officially referred to as the AN-J-3, this modern jacket removed the epaulets and added a bi-swing back and underarm gusset to make it easier to move around the cockpit. This jacket is crafted from darker brown leather, with a full cut for a looser fit. Along with the hand warmer pockets, this jacket has an inside snap-close pocket.

“Either of these jackets will look great on any pilot,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “Add a pair of aviator sunglasses and you’ll be the sharpest pilot on the airport.”

Sporty’s also offers a complete jacket restoration service, ensuring your jacket will last for decades.

Both jackets come in sizes Small to 2XL with additional long sizes available in the larger sizes. For a limited time The Classic Leather Bomber Jacket [3051A] and the Modern Leather Flight Jacket [6487A] are each available for $225 which is $100 off the normal retail price of $325.00. All Sporty’s products may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Wright Bros. Propeller Collection Gets a Facelift

Wright Bros. Propeller Collection Gets a Facelift

Long-time, much-loved propellers upgraded

Vintage Wooden Propeller

You can always spot a pilot by the old-time propeller hanging in the den. Now Sporty’s Wright Bros. Collection has updated these popular products in time for holiday giving.  The six-foot Classic Wooden Propeller with brass edging is an authentic reproduction of that found on a World War I aircraft. The prop is hand-crafted from solid mahogany with brass-hammered edging around the blades and a detailed brass center hub. The propeller comes with its own hardware to make hanging simple.

A simplified version of the 6-foot propeller is the Vintage Wooden Propeller. This propeller is an authentic reproduction of props from World War I and the 1920s and is also handcrafted of solid wood, just like the originals.

The Propeller Bar Stool has four hand-carved mahogany propellers that serve as its legs. Replicating World War I-era propellers, the legs of this bar stool are accented with brass hubs and leading edges. Just like a regular bar stool, this one features a black metal foot rest and is topped with a 2” by 12” padded seat. The Propeller Bar Stool measures 30” high by 20” wide and arrives completely assembled.

The Propeller Desk Clock is handmade from mahogany with painted red tips. The clock is 4” in diameter and features black numbers engraved into the wood with black hands mounted onto the center. This clock has a quartz movement and operates on one AA battery. The bottom of the Propeller Desk Clock has a felt backing to avoid slipping and to protect furniture. Overall, this clock measures 17.5” high by 6” wide.

The Classic Wooden Propeller (6’) [#10975W] is available for $199.99, and the Vintage Wooden Propeller (6’) [#10076W] is available for $149.99.  The Propeller Bar Stool [10944W] is available for $179.99, and the Propeller Desk Clock [#3400W] is available for $49.99. These items, along with hundreds of aviation-themed gifts, are available at wright-bros.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Orders received by Saturday, December 21, 2018 may still be delivered in time for Christmas.

Call for Entries: The Richard Collins Writing Prize for Young Pilots

Call for Entries: The Richard Collins Writing Prize for Young Pilots

$2,500 award for a pilot up to age 24

The Richard Collins family has partnered with Sporty’s to offer The Richard Collins Writing Prize for Young Pilots. To qualify, the writer must be a pilot (including student pilot) who is 24 years of age or younger. The article must be original, not previously published, and no longer than 1,500 words. The topic may reflect any aspect of general aviation flying.

The winning article will be published in Air Facts, the publication Richard’s father Leighton founded in 1938 and which was relaunched eight years ago by Sporty’s as an online magazine. The articles will be judged by a panel of three: Richard Collins, Jr., J. Mac McClellan, and Amy Laboda.

“Mac worked with Richard for nearly 40 years, and Amy was hired by Richard for her first full-time aviation writing position,” says Sporty’s Vice President and Air Facts Editor John Zimmerman. “Over the years, many young pilots were hired and mentored by Richard.”

The winning article will be published in Air Facts while its writer, the Richard L. Collins Scholar, will receive a check for $2,500. The prize will be awarded during the 2019 Sun’n Fun Fly-In in Lakeland, FL.

Articles may be submitted now through March 1, 2019, and sent in as Word document to [email protected].  In addition, young pilots are required to submit a 100-word bio to accompany their articles.

“This writing prize honors two passions of my father – Air Facts and finding new writing talent among young pilots,” says Richard’s son, Rich. “My sisters, Charlotte and Sarah, and I are honored to not only help fund this prize, but to help to continue my father’s legacy. We know this effort would make him happy.”

Sporty’s Releases 2019 Learn to Fly and Instrument Rating Courses

Sporty’s Releases 2019 Learn to Fly and Instrument Rating Courses

New Android app, new test prep tools make Sporty’s the most user-friendly courses available

Sporty’s has released the 2019 editions of its Learn to Fly and Instrument Rating courses. Even with the significant enhancements, the prices for both courses remain the same and pilots who have purchased previous years’ courses automatically gain access to the 2019 edition free of charge.

“Three years ago we set out to take our courses to the next level, and with this edition we believe we have the world standard in pilot training courses,” said Sporty’s Academy President Eric Radtke. “Pilots can now train anywhere, from laptop to smartphone, in a modern style with HD video segments and powerful test prep features.”

Online course users will appreciate the enhanced test prep tools. Detailed analytics show pilots which topics need the most work, and smart study sessions automatically tailor questions to each user’s specific needs. Individual quiz questions offer detailed explanations, complete with interactive reference links for further study. The result is more effective and efficient knowledge test preparation. Plus, a comprehensive video search tool makes it easy to review specific topics.

Keeping your flight instructor in the loop is easier than ever in the 2019 edition. CFIs are able to view a complete listing of all videos in the course and which have been completed. CFIs can, in turn, assign segments to review and stay apprised of completed material. Plus, CFIs can see completed practice tests with the ability to access that session and see how the student is performing.

“Of course there’s a lot more than just technical improvements,” says Radtke. “We’ve added many hours of new HD video content, covering important topics like ADS-B technology, Air Traffic Control procedures, weather flying, communications tips, and much more.”

Continuing its growth as a fully integrated training platform, CloudAhoy is now integrated into the courses. Users can connect their CloudAhoy account to their Sporty’s course so any flights logged with CloudAhoy will sync, including a listing of each flight maneuver from the lesson. What’s more, every maneuver shown in the CloudAhoy flight log will be connected to the corresponding maneuver guide in Sporty’s courses for quick review. Last year’s courses integrated with ForeFlight and Redbird, and further integrations are already in the works.

Introducing Sporty’s Pilot Training App for Android

The 2019 course editions can now can be accessed through a native Android app for phones, tablets and Chromebooks. The Pilot Training app allows pilots to stream video segments or download them for offline viewing, and also offers customized study sessions. With the addition of this app, pilots can learn wherever it’s convenient: via Windows or Mac with the online training portal, on iPads and iPhones with the dedicated iOS app, on a big screen with the Apple TV app, and on Android devices.

Sporty’s Private Pilot Learn to Fly course [#E1753A] is available for $199.99 and Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course [#E4200A] is available for $199.99. Both include full access to all formats: online, iOS app, Android app, and Apple TV app. Each course may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Winter’s Coming: Stay Warm with Flight Outfitters’ Bush Pilot Jacket

Winter’s Coming: Stay Warm with Flight Outfitters’ Bush Pilot Jacket

It’s the bomber jacket for the modern pilot

Designed specifically with pilots in mind, Flight Outfitters’ Bush Pilot Jacket is essential equipment as its rugged exterior blocks out wind and rain, and can stand up to almost any abuse. Equally as comfortable as it is tough, the Bush Pilot Jacket has a quilted body lining and Sherpa accents for warmth.

Pilots will appreciate the pleated bi-swing action, which makes it easy to move one’s arms in the cockpit without restriction. A zippered chest pocket is ideal for storing sunglasses or displaying a ramp ID.

“As for warmth during those freezing pre-flights, this jacket has two lined hand-warmer pockets and a quilted lining,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “It’s already a favorite among the pilots at Sporty’s.”

More pilot-centric features include adjustable snap side tabs to give you breathing room during long flights. Large cuffs easily accommodate oversized pilot watches and gloves. Three inside chest pockets organize your cell phone and other small accessories.

The sturdiness of the Bush Pilot Jacket is assured with its long-lasting construction including the super duty cotton duck water resistant fabric, double-needle stitched seams, and a heavy duty brass front zipper.

Flight Outfitters Bush Pilot Jacket [2744A] is available in men’s sizes small through extra-extra large and may be ordered for $99.95 at sportys.com or by calling 800-SPORTYS.
