The Sporty’s Foundation Concludes Successful Second Quarter Bequests

Philanthropy remains a core value at Sporty’s

For the second quarter of 2013, The Sporty’s Foundation made bequests in the amount of $35,498 to groups and organizations promoting youth programs, making the 2013 total to date $73,996.

The top program was EAA’s Next Step, a year-round initiative in partnership with EAA, where Young Eagles are encouraged to continue their aviation training by accessing Sporty’s Complete Learn to Fly course online at no charge.

“The Sporty’s Foundation works with many organizations that are dedicated to ensuring a next generation of pilots and technicians,” says Sporty’s Founder and Chairman Hal Shevers. “That support might go for anything from scholarships to museum exhibits.”

Other recipients of The Sporty’s Foundation’s second quarter bequests include disbursement of scholarship funds for the University of Cincinnati Professional Pilot Training Program and Women in Aviation, International; the Air and Space Museum; Youth Aviation Adventure; and the AOPA Foundation.

Launched in March 2007, The Sporty’s Foundation funds programs that work to educate young people on the excitement and life-enhancing potential of general aviation.

E6B: A Pilot’s Favorite App

Sporty’s app enhanced for greater utility

Sporty’s upgraded E6B app features an all-new design for faster calculations.

Sporty’s upgraded E6B app features an all-new design for faster calculations.

Sporty’s best-selling E6B app has now been updated and improved, with new features and an all-new design. This powerful app includes all the features of the traditional E6B, including 22 aviation functions, 20 conversions, and complete timer features. Version 2.0 of the app adds a quick-access favorites list, a redesigned interface and an all-new weight and balance calculator. The E6B app is available for Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

“Based on pilot feedback, we’ve made the E6B app faster and easier to navigate, all while adding new features,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “The app is written by pilots for pilots, so it features an intuitive menu layout and plain English explanations.”

The powerful new weight and balance function allows pilots to store custom aircraft templates for each airplane they fly. After initial setup, calculating gross weight or CG takes just a few seconds. Additionally, pilots can group frequently used features into a favorites list to be more easily accessible.

“The app saves data as it’s entered, and data can be used across functions, so pilots will spend less time entering data and more time flying,” adds Zimmerman.

The E6B app is not just for student pilots. Experienced pilots will come to rely on a number of features such as Top of Descent, Specific Range and Planned Mach #. The timer can be set to count up or down to time approaches, holds or switching fuel tanks. A clock shows Home, Local and Zulu time.

“We’ve also made some upgrades to the Conversions feature,” says Zimmerman. “It’s easy to convert nautical miles to statute miles, Celsius to Fahrenheit and lots of other handy conversions.”

Sporty’s E6B App [#91000] is available for $9.99 and may be downloaded on the iTunes App Store or at sportys.com/apps.

Flying is Serious; Pilots Don’t Always Have to Be

Humorous signs lighten the mood

These signs are pilot-style interior decorating.

These signs are pilot-style interior decorating.ous signs lighten the mood

Sporty’s Humorous Signs show the light-hearted side of aviation. Patterned after vintage signs from the 1920s and 1930s, these three signs have a weathered, old-style look.

  • “Four Forces of Flight” aren’t what you are taught in ground school. Rather, the sign illustrates the Four Forces as money, dreams, the FAA and reality.
  • “Airspeed and Money” are the topics of a sign which helpfully explains, “It only takes two things to fly.”
  • “FAA Mission” is not a lofty bureaucratic discourse. This sign states the FAA Mission as “We’re not happy until you’re not happy.”

These Humorous Signs measure 24” by 12” and come with four holes for mounting. Ideal for hangar or office, these signs are sure to put a smile on the face of your guests and visitors.

“We all take our flying seriously,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “But we like to have fun too. The humor in these signs will be appreciated by every pilot.”

Four Forces of Flight [2367A]; Airspeed and Money [2565A]; and FAA Mission [2390A] are available for $19.95 each and may be ordered at sportys.com or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS.

Don’t Tackle EAA AirVenture without the Official Airshow App

Sporty’s AirVenture app does not require an internet connection

Sporty’s AirVenture app does not require an internet connection.

Sporty’s develops complete Oshkosh app for 3rd year

Sporty’s 2013 EAA AirVenture app is now available for download – and it’s free. This useful app – now in its third year – has been continually enhanced with user feedback to make it a must-have for anyone attending EAA AirVenture.

“With literally thousands of exhibitors, airplanes, workshops, forums, talks, social gatherings, and displays, you have to approach AirVenture with a plan,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “Spend some time organizing your visit, stick your phone in your pocket and you’re set.”

After you download Sporty’s AirVenture app, you’ll see all the maps, times, locations and schedules all in one place. You can use this data to build your own experience. With “My Schedule,” it’s easy and fun to make an hour-by-hour itinerary, with only the events you want to attend.

With the app, you can also access EAA news for last-minute changes and updates, Twitter feeds and EAA Radio.

A user favorite feature is back again this year. An interactive exhibitors list and showgrounds map will pinpoint the exact location of a display. You can group your must-sees geographically if desired.

The app also includes driving instructions and detailed parking information. Admission tickets may be purchased in advance via the app to avoid long lines. The complete EAA AirVenture NOTAM is included for arrival and departure procedures as well as a convenient guide to Understanding AirVenture ATC and even special FBO offers.

Sporty’s has also created apps for Sun ‘n Fun, AOPA Summit and the International Women in Aviation Conference.

Sporty’s 2013 AirVenture app is available for iOS and Android devices, including iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The Android version of the app is designed for both phones and tablets, including the Kindle Fire. For more information, or to download the free app, visit sportys.com/apps.

Join Sporty’s under the Big Tent at AirVenture

Sporty's Tent gets even bigger.

Sporty’s Tent gets even bigger.

Expanded retail store offers interactive experience

Sporty’s has expanded its EAA AirVenture presence again for 2013 to an even bigger tent to give show-goers more room to walk around and have a hands-on experience with the products. Located in outdoor space #260 in front of Hangar B, Sporty’s will have a huge array of products on display, including an on-going demonstration of the Stratus, Sporty’s in-flight weather receiver, now in its second generation.

“We experimented last year with moving from an inside exhibit to our own tent outside,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “Our tent was so well received that we’ll have a bigger tent for this year.”

Sporty’s on-site, 1,500 square foot display includes a headset demo station where customers can try on a wide range of headsets, side by side, without having to run from booth to booth. New this year is a GoPro video camera demo station where customers can experience the simplicity of these camera systems. Also available will be a large assortment of iPad accessories, Flight Gear bags, pilot kneeboards, RAM mounts, radios and more.

Sporty’s AirVenture tent allows elbow room for show-goers to confer with Sporty’s pilot/experts away from the heat and noise of the inside hangars. More than just “booth workers,” Sporty’s staff will host the tent to be able to talk pilot-to-pilot with attendees. CFIs from Sporty’s Academy will be on site to answer any questions about learning to fly.

In addition, David Zitt, Sporty’s Academy flight school manager, will discuss Sporty’s Learn to Fly course and creating the next generation of pilots in the EAA Chapters and Young Eagles Pavilion on Monday, July 29 at 1:00 p.m.

“All in all, this is a big week for Sporty’s,” says Zimmerman. “Oshkosh will be the place to be for pilots and aircraft owners, and we look forward to greeting our customers.”

Winner visits Sporty’s and is handed the keys to his new airplane

Christopher Boyle, a private pilot from Arcata, California, is the winner of Sporty’s 2013 Aircraft Sweepstakes, a Legend Cub. He was informed of his winning status by Sporty’s President Michael Wolf during Sporty’s Annual Fly In on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

“All of us in business have phone calls we don’t want to make,” says Wolf, “but calling our Sweepstakes winner is the one phone call I look forward to making each year. I get to tell a pilot he is the winner of an all-new airplane. How great is that?”

While at Sporty’s, Boyle was given a bonus prize: He earned his tailwheel endorsement in his airplane from one of Sporty’s Academy flight instructors.

Sporty’s Sweepstakes airplane for 2014 is an all-new Van’s RV-12. This aircraft is the first factory-built airplane from Van’s, a leading designer of kit aircraft. This factory-built RV-12, one of a dozen in Van’s Signature Series, comes with an impressive panel including the Dynon Skyview system, GPS, Mode S transponder and autopilot. A Garmin SL-40 comm radio, Flightcom intercom and ELT round out the avionics suite.

All Sporty’s Pilot Shop customers are automatically entered to win the airplane every time they order. Orders received between May 11, 2013, and May 9, 2014, are eligible to win the RV-12.
