Sporty’s Introduces the L6 Handheld COM Radio

The only aviation radio with a built-in LEMO plug

The all-new patented L6 is a low-cost backup radio, and the only handheld aviation radio that can be connected to a LEMO headset without using a special adapter. The simplicity of the L6 makes it a pilot favorite: just turn it on, type in a frequency, and plug in your headset.

“The L6 is made exclusively for pilots – there are no menus, no wires, and no adapters,” says Sporty’s Director of Aviation Products and Marketing Doug Ranly. “Dedicated volume and squelch knobs are easy to adjust, even in turbulence, and the high contrast, extra-large screen and backlit keypad make a big difference during an emergency.”

In addition to push-button frequency entry, the L6 has a handy last frequency button to quickly switch back and forth between tower and ground, or approach and CTAF. It can also store 20 memory channels, which are easily recalled using the L6’s large, backlit screen. Pilots can even access NOAA weather radio stations for updated forecasts.

A built-in 3.5mm jack accommodates wired earbuds or computer style headsets, making the L6 the perfect radio for walking around an airshow. The transmit power is 6 watts peak to maximize range, especially important in an emergency situation.

Most pilots will use the included alkaline battery pack (uses six AA batteries) for all-day power without worrying about rechargeable batteries or cords. The L6 is made to sit ready in a flight bag for weeks then be ready to go at a moment’s notice, but a USB-C port on the side of the radio is also available as an option to power the radio.

“We believe regular AA batteries are the best choice for backup use, but the ability to power the L6 with a USB-C cable is a convenient option,” adds Ranly. “From Sentry ADS-B receivers to iPad Pros, this cable is increasingly common in aircraft.”
