Stratus has become the most popular ADS-B receiver in aviation, and one important reason is that its capabilities continue to grow with free updates, much like the ForeFlight app itself. Over the past two years, it has grown from simply a portable ADS-B weather receiver to an in-flight traffic system, backup attitude indicator and now an integrated flight data recorder.

“Because ForeFlight and Stratus were built as a system, it’s fast and easy to do firmware updates, with no cables or computer downloads required,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “This allows us to continually add new features, and we’re proud to offer these upgrades free to all Stratus 2 owners.”

Completing the update is simple: just update ForeFlight to version 6.4, then connect Stratus to your iPad and open the Stratus Status menu. Select the “tap to update” option and let the app do the rest. After completing the update, you’ll see a new option that allows you to enable Stratus flight data recording and view previously recorded track logs.

With the feature enabled, Stratus will start recording automatically when the unit is powered on and the built-in GPS senses motion. Stratus 2 records position, speed, and altitude data, plus pitch and roll information from the built-in AHRS. Up to 20 hours of data can be stored on the receiver’s built-in memory. After your flight, it’s easy to transfer the data to ForeFlight Mobile where the logs are available to view and share. Flight logs can also be exported to apps like Google Earth or CloudAhoy for detailed post-flight analysis.

“Flight data recording is a great tool for flight instructors and new pilots to visually debrief each flight,” says Zimmerman. “Students can see progress over time as they practice maneuvers and instructors can reinforce the effects of wind on performing those maneuvers. In addition, you always have a record of your flights to help with filling out your logbook.”

Stratus 2 [8217A] is available for $899 and may be purchased at or by calling 1-800-SPORTYS. Orders placed by Monday, December 22, 2014, may be delivered in time for Christmas.
