Since the launch in October, 2014 of one of the first FAA-approved Airline Transport Pilot Certified Training Programs (ATP-CTP), classes have been filling up quickly.  Given the increased demand, additional capacity for this specialized training has been added for 2015.

The FAA mandates that all pilots seeking an ATP certificate for multiengine complete an FAA-approved ATP-CTP course prior to taking the ATP Knowledge test.  ATP-CTP training requires at least 30 hours of classroom work and 10 hours of simulator training, six of which must be completed in a level C flight simulator or higher.

ATP-CTP provided by ABX Air takes place at the ABX Air learning center in Wilmington, Ohio.  The six-day course includes four days of classroom instruction and the remainder of time in the simulator.  ABX Air’s world class facility features modern, full-motion flight simulators and  instruction from professional and experienced airline pilots.

“Training includes all subject areas required by the FAA,” says Sporty’s Academy President Eric Radtke. “Those topics encompass aerodynamics, upset prevention and recovery, air carrier operations, turbine engines, crew resource management and more.  Plus you’re tapping into tens of thousands of hours of heavy jet experience among the ABX instructional team.”

“We’ve been thrilled with the response and positive feedback we’re receiving from program graduates,” says ABX Training Supervisor Steve Hanshew.  “We’ve been able to make subtle adjustments along the way to respond to our clients and make the course even more engaging as we anticipate the demand to continue.”

To be eligible for the ATP-CTP, applicants must possess a minimum of an FAA Private Pilot Certification.  At course completion an ATP-CTP completion certificate is provided that is then required to take the FAA knowledge test for multiengine ATP.  ATP knowledge test results are now valid for 60 calendar months.  The ATP-CTP completion certificate does not expire.

Simulator training includes navigation, automation and high altitude operations in the B767 and DC-9 level C flight simulators under the guidance of the experienced ABX Air instructors.  Classes may be scheduled up to six months in advance.

The ATP-CTP course [2200A] costs $4500, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of simulator training and required materials and supplies. The fee does not include travel or lodging. The course fee is non-refundable beginning 30 days from the scheduled class.

Upcoming classes begin March 30, April 13 and April 27.  For more information, including a helpful webinar and a printable guide on the new ATP regulations or to enroll, visit Sportys.com/ATP.
